The s, released in late September, reveals that CIC institutions are among the top in the nation in academic research and development spending in science and engineering fields as well as non-science and engineering fields.

The University of Michigan was ranked second in expenditures for science and engineering research and development, with more than $1 billion spent in fiscal year (FY) 2009. The University of Wisconsin-Madison ranked third at $952 million; Pennsylvania State University, ninth, $753 million; University of Minnesota, 10th, $742 million; and Ohio State University, 13th, $716 million. Only the top 20 institutions were listed.

For expenditures for non-science and engineering research in FY 2009, several more CIC universities were listed in the top 20 -- including three of the top five: top-ranked Purdue University at $70 million; University of Michigan, $63 million, ranked second; University of Wisconsin-Madison, $62 million, fifth; Northwestern University, $40 million, 10th; Michigan State University, $33 million, 13th; and Ohio State University, $27 million, 20th.

The survey reflects funds received from all sources, including federal, state, industry, and private money.
